Junior Brianna LeRoy of the University of Utah track & field team captured second place in the heptathlon at the Mountain West Conference championships. Her best finish of day two was a second-place effort in the long jump with a mark of 18-10.5. Her two-day total was 4,971 points, 130 points ahead of the third-place contender.
"Brianna started with a big effort in the long jump for her first event today. It was a great way to start day two," said Utah Associate Head Coach Burk Bockman. "She will be in the open long jump tomorrow so that was a good setup for her. We didn't quite get what we were hoping for from the javelin, but she competed well and maintained second place. Then, she did what she had to do in the 800-meter and was able to finish second, which was great for her. She just missed the goal of 5,000 individual points, but it's a conference meet so we will definitely take the eight team points."
Entering day two with 3,051 points, LeRoy earned 774 points for her second-place long jump. She also took fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.48, adding another 626 points, and placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 106.0 to earn 520 points.
"Brianna was all-conference in the pentathlon at the indoor conference meet and is now all-conference at the outdoor meet in the heptathlon as well, so it was a very good year for her," said Bockman.
LeRoy improved three spots from her finish in the heptathlon at last season's meet as she settled for a fifth-place finish as a sophomore with 4,670 points.
Utah earned eight points in the team standings after LeRoy's performance.
The championship meet continues Friday at the Jack Christiansen Track. Video updates will be available from Runnerspace and live results will be available at rtspt.com.
