SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-13, 1-4 MWC) was defeated by 54th-ranked New Mexico (13-9, 3-2 MWC) Saturday by a score of 5-2 at the Liberty Park Tennis Center. Junior Benito Suriano and freshman Ben Tasevac earned Utah's two points from the Nos. 2 and 6 singles positions.
After New Mexico won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov was forced to retire at the top spot after falling 6-1 in the first set to Jadon Phillips, giving the Lobos a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Alejandro Mednilla was then defeated by Phil Anderson, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot, putting New Mexico up 3-0.
The Lobos saw their match clinching point when freshman Devin Lane dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Carl Ho at the No. 3 position, and extended their lead to 5-0 when freshman Matt Cowley suffered a hard-fought 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 loss to Conor Berg at the fifth spot.
Tasevac posted Utah's first point at the No. 6 slot, battling Joe Wood for a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory. Suriano then netted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ben Dunbar at the No. 2 spot, making the final score 5-2 in favor of New Mexico.
In doubles play, Cowley and freshman Gino Octa fell to Berg and Dunbar, 8-3, at the No. 2 slot. New Mexico then earned the doubles point when Suriano and Medinilla were defeated by Anderson and Phillips, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. Mamedov and Lane then suffered a tight 8-6 loss to Ho and Wood.
The Utes return to action when they take on in-state rival BYU in Provo at the BYU Tennis Complex Saturday at 1 p.m. MT.
