PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-14, 1-5 MWC) was defeated by No. 35 BYU Saturday at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Complex. Freshman Alejandro Medinilla earned Utah's solo point at the No. 3 singles position with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory.

Medinilla and junior Benito Suriano teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot, but were forced to default to Georgy Batrakov and Thomas Shubert due to an injury suffered by Suriano. Freshmen Matt Cowley and Garrett LaBarre then fell to Evan Urbina and Patrick Kawka, 8-3, at the second slot, giving the Cougars the doubles point.

Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Devin Lane earned a doubles victory for the Utes at the No. 3 position, topping Spencer Smith and Roman Warias, 8-4.

Lane was the first to finish in singles play for the Utes, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Batrakov at the No. 2 spot, putting BYU up 2-0. Medinilla then made the score 2-1 with a victory over Smith at the third slot, follwed by freshman Ben Tasevac's 6-4, 6-2 loss to Shubert at the No. 5 position, making the score 3-1, BYU.

Cowley battled 107th-ranked Kawka at the No. 4 slot, falling in the first set 6-4, then downing Kawka 2-6 in the second. Cowley ultimately couldn't take the third set and fell 6-4, giving the Cougars the match clinching point at 4-1.

BYU extended their lead to 5-1 when LaBarre was defeated by Warias, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 6 position. At the top spot, Mamedov suffered a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 loss to Urbina, making the final score 6-1 in favor of the Cougars.
