SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-12, 1-3 MWC) blanked Air Force Friday at the Liberty Park Tennis Center by a score of 7-0. The Utes improved to a 7-3 home record, while capturing their first conference victory. Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov clinched the match for the Utes for the third time this season, netting a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position.

"I am very proud of our guys today," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "All season long they have competed very well in matches and worked incredibly hard in practice, but we didn't reward ourselves by winning matches. Today all of our hard work paid off and I am very excited for our young team."

The Utes started out dominant in doubles play, earning the point in two sets. At the third position, Mamedov and freshman Devin Lane downed Taylor Soster and Sam Barnes, 8-3, while freshmen Gino Octa and Matt Cowley topped Andy Jackson and Alex Grubbs, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot.

Junior Benito Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla then fell to Lance Wilhelm and Steven Young, 8-3, at the No. 1 slot.

Going into singles with a 1-0 advantage, Medinilla dominated Young, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot, putting the Utes up 2-0. Devin Lane then extended the lead to 3-0, downing Soster, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 position.

Mamedov earned the match clinching point at 4-0 with his victory over Jackson at the second spot. After dropping his first set, 5-7, freshman Ben Tasevac rallied for a win, defeating Alex Beaussart, 6-3, 10-3 in the second and third sets at the No. 6 slot, making the score 5-0.

Cowley then battled Grubbs at the No. 4 position, dropping the first set, 3-6, and coming back for a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory. Suriano completed the sweep with a tight 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 10-8 win over Wilhelm at the top spot, making the final score 7-0.

The Utes return to action tomorrow at the Liberty Park Tennis Center when they host No. 54-ranked New Mexico. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
