Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On falling behind early:
"I was pretty surprised. Our hands were down and it is one of the simplest things we talk about in our defensive scouting report. They had a bunch of capable three-point shooters. They did have a couple kids that made threes that normally don't. But I think when you are in the middle of one of those games, where the rim gets big, a lot of guys feel like they can shoot it. Unfortunately, that got us. But one thing I noticed that needs to happen is we need to have a defensive focus from the beginning. We didn't really start getting energized until we started making baskets. And we have to understand...I have talked about it before...from the opening tip we have to fight. It is going to be on our coaching staff now to make sure our guys, our five starters, are ready to play. We can't give teams a head start like that."
On cutting down on mistakes:
"I remember there was a point when we were down seven. I know we didn't execute on a play offensively and then defensively, and it cost us at both ends. We talk about all these four-point plays...it's ok to maybe make one mistake, but you have to eliminate the next one at the other end so it doesn't become a four-point play. That is what has been adding up on us lately. We just need to learn the value of every possession and not let mistakes multiply, which seems to be that case with us right now."
On continuing to work and trying to improve:
"We are just not going to stop (coaching). There was an example tonight, eight straight points by the other team and we were being scored on by our own actions, on things that we run. I think it gets carried away when we are down 10 or down 20, I think it's easy for guys to get in the mentality that the game is over. For us defensively, that is how you give up 80 pretty fast, when you don't fight through some of those screens and continue to close out. Good teams find a way to compete regardless of what the score is and that is what we are lacking right now. Once things start getting out-of-hand, the effort diminishes."
Cal State Fullerton Head Coach Bob Burton
"Larry is going to do a terrific job, he will do great. I have been through what he is going through. We have a more experienced team, but Larry will do a great job here."
"We shot the ball really well. We hit great shots. I thought we were playing really good defense, then it got away from us. We started settling for poor shots. But I thought the start of the game was key for us, that gave us confidence that we could score. Guys will play better defense when they are scoring the ball."
On coming back to Utah as a former assistant coach here:
"It was really strange. When I scheduled the game, that was one of the reasons that I wanted to do it, to get a chance to come back here since I coached in 1986-87. Then when I got back here I started seeing many friends and that made me nervous. I thought `I hope we play well'. Obviously this is a special place. I have always rooted for Utah and I am going to root for Larry too. I will be excited when he gets it going again and the program gets back to where it should be, and they will get there. In my heart I have always been a big Utah fan, whether Lynn Archibald was here or Rick Majerus. But tonight, obviously I was coaching my team and wanted us to win. But I wish the best of luck to Utah and will be rooting for them."
