Individual and Team Notes
Washburn Posts Another Double-Double, Leads Pac-12 in FG%
Washburn posted his second double-double of the year Saturday with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Fresno State, including a career-high five offensive boards.
Head coach Larry Krystkowiak has stated that he would like Utah's big men to maintain a rebounding pace around one every four minutes. With 51 boards in 202 minutes this season, Washburn is eaxctly on that pace at one rebound every 3.96 minutes.
Washburn is shooting a very efficient 64.6% from the floor for the season (31-of-48), highest on the team among players with a minimum of two made baskets per game, and tops in the Pac-12 Conference. He came into the season as Utah's most efficient shooter for two year's running, including a 61.8% mark on 76-of-123 last season.
Hines Scores Double Digits Again, Leads Utes Against Fresno State
Junior guard Chris Hines posted a team-high 14 points at Fresno State, his season high and one away from a career best as well. He also tied his career high with five rebounds.
Hines has now scored double figures in four of his six games this season, and missed the mark by just one against UMass at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Hines currently ranks third in the Pac-12 with 2.5 made 3-pointers per game. He came into the season as the Utes' top returning 3-point threat, coming off a 36.8% mark last season (31-84). He is currently knocking down 3-pointers at a 36.6% clip (15-of-41).
Martin Posts Second Double-Digit Game at Fresno State
Junior wing Cedric Martin had a solid performance Saturday at Fresno State, scoring 10 points, including seven in the first half, and five of Utah's first seven in the game. Martin was 3-of-7 from the field and knocked down his only 3-point attempt.
The Utes at the Huntsman Center
Utah owns an all-time record of 527-126 (.807) all-time in its current home, the Jon M. Huntsman Center, including a 1-1 mark this season.
After playing five of their first seven games away from the Huntsman Center, the Utes return for four straight home games from Dec. 7 to Dec. 19, including the rivalry game against BYU on Dec. 10.
The Utes have posted a winning record at home in 38 consecutive seasons, beginning in 1973-74. In conference home games over the last 17 years, Utah is 104-22 (.825). With 15,000 seats, the Huntsman Center is the largest arena in the Pac-12 (excluding temporary and tournament sites).
Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
With the win against San Diego Christian in the season opener, Krystkowiak grabbed his first victory as the Utes' head coach. For his NCAA coaching career, Krystkowiak is in his third year and owns a 43-25 overall record (.632).
Krystkowiak (pronounced krist-KOH-vee-ak), who has prior head coaching experience in the NCAA, CBA and NBA, left a position as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets to become the 15th head coach in Utah men's basketball history.
In his previous collegiate head coaching post, Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA appearances as the Grizzlies' from 2004-06 before joining the NBA coaching ranks.
Josh "Jiggy" Watkins Suspended Indefinitely
Krystkowiak released the following statement Monday:
"I have suspended Josh Watkins indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Josh will not be participating in any team activities until he has met certain obligations we have laid out for him. It's an unfortunate circumstance but we hope he can meet these obligations and become a part of our team once again. This is a team matter and I will not be discussing the details of his suspension any further."
Watkins is Utah's leading scorer at 17.7 points per game, second-best in the Pac-12. He also leads the team in assists at 4.9 per game.
Storey Could Start in Place of Watkins
With Watkins out for the Cal State Fullerton game, freshman point guard Kareem Storey seems the logical choice to take his place. Storey is averaging 3.9 points per game to go with 2.1 assists and 1.7 rebounds. Storey holds career highs of 12 points vs. UMass, three rebounds against Fresno State and UMass and seven assists at Boise State. It would be the first start of his collegiate career.
Utes Ink Five for 2012
Utah opened the early signing period by inking five players who will join the Utes for the 2012-13 season. The signing class includes high school seniors Josh Hearlihy (North Hollywood, Calif., Harvard-Westlake HS), Jordan Loveridge (West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) and Justin Seymour (Marietta, Ga., Wheeler HS), along with Southern Utah transfer Dallin Bachynski (Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Sir Winston Churchill HS) and returning LDS missionary Jeremy Olsen (Lawrenceville, Ga., Collins Hill HS).
