Team and Individual Notes
Watkins Among Pac-12 Leaders in Scoring, Assists
After being held to a career-low three points in Utah's win against Idaho State on Friday, Watkins bounced back with a career-high 26 points in the 72-67 victory over Portland on Monday. Watkins was 7-of-13 from the field and tied a career-high with 11 made free throws (11-16), while posting a game-high six assists and making two steals. Watkins is now averaging 16.7 points per game, second-best in the Pac-12.
With his six helpers vs. UP and a season-high eight assists against Idaho State, Watkins brought his average to 5.3 assists per game on the year, good for second in the Pac-12. He has led or tied for the team lead in scoring in eight of his 10 games this season.
Watkins has scored 20-plus points nine times in 41 career games as a Ute and has hit double figures 33 times.
Farr and Martin Back it Up
Junior wing Cedric Martin and junior forward Dijon Farr each posted solid numbers against Portland, backing up their respective career nights in the previous game against Idaho State.
Martin posted 11 points and five rebounds against Portland, which followed his career-high 19 points against Idaho State. Farr scored nine points and pulled down four rebounds against the Pilots after dropping a career-high 16 points on ISU and making a career-high four steals.
Over the last two games, the two have combined to shoot 19-of-36 (.528) from the field. Martin is 8-of-16 from 3-point range in those two games as well.
Martin has now scored double digits five times this season and in four of the Utes' last five games. He is currently Utah's best 3-point threat among players with at least 10 attempts, shooting 39.5% (15-of-38), which ranks 12th in the Pac-12.
Washburn Nets Another Big Game
Washburn has posted back-to-back big games and re-established his consistent, double-figure scoring ways. He racked up 18 points and collected seven rebounds on Monday against Portland, which followed a near-miss double-double effort on Friday against Idaho State (17 points and nine rebounds).
Washburn has scored double digits in eight of 11 games this season and is now among the top 30 scorers in the Pac-12, ranking No. 23 at 11.5 points per game. He is also tied for sixth in the league in rebounding at 7.0 boards per game, best on the team.
Washburn is shooting a very efficient 60.3% from the floor for the season (47-of-78), highest on the team and fourth-best in the Pac-12. He is also knocking down 78.6% of his free throws (33-of-42), best on the squad and 10th in the Pac-12.
Head coach Larry Krystkowiak has stated that he would like Utah's big men to maintain a rebounding pace around one every four minutes. With 77 boards in 307 minutes this season, Washburn is exactly on that pace.
Hines Continues to Battle
Junior guard Chris Hines continued to show his toughness and grit through a myriad of injuries this season. Despite being held to just four points and going without a 3-point bucket on Monday, Hines is averaging a career-best 7.7 points per game.
Hines ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in 3-pointers made with 2.0 per game.
Utes Post Season-Best Defensive Efforts in Back-to-Back Games
In the loss to BYU on Dec. 10, the Utes posted their best defensive numbers of the season, holding the Cougars to just 38.8% from the field and just 19 made field goals, both season-lows by an NCAA Div. I opponent. Utah then followed up with a tremendous defensive effort against Idaho State, holding the Bengals to just 59 points, a season-low by a Ute opponent, while posting the second-lowest field goal percentage allowed at 39.6%.
Turnover Improvement Continues
With 12 turnovers against Portland, Utah bested its average turnover mark by two or more for the third consecutive game. The Utes entered the game averaging 14.0 giveaways per contest and have now lowered their average to 13.8 per game, tied for seventh in the Pac-12 and a marked improvement since their 16.5 turnovers-per-game average from earlier this season.
Watkins and Storey Dish It Out
Watkins and freshman guard Kareem Storey have combined for 22 assists and only seven turnovers over the last two games, and assist-to-turnover ratio of better than 3-1.
With eight assists from Watkins and six from Storey against Idaho State, each posted five or more assists in the same game for the second time this season. The previous instance was at Boise State, when Storey's career-high seven helpers was complimented by five from Watkins.
The Utes at the Huntsman Center
Utah owns an all-time record of 529-128 (.805) all-time in its current home, the Jon M. Huntsman Center, including a 3-3 mark this season.
The Utes have posted a winning record at home in 38 consecutive seasons, beginning in 1973-74. In conference home games over the last 17 years, Utah is 104-22 (.825).
With 15,000 seats, the Huntsman Center is the largest arena in the Pac-12 (excluding temporary and tournament sites).
Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
With the win against Idaho State on Friday, Krystkowiak picked up his third win as the Utes' head coach. For his NCAA coaching career, Krystkowiak is now 45-28 (.616) overall in his third year.
Krystkowiak (pronounced krist-KOH-vee-ak), who has prior head coaching experience in the NCAA, CBA and NBA, left a position as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets to become the 15th head coach in Utah men's basketball history.
In his previous collegiate head coaching post, Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA appearances as the Grizzlies' from 2004-06 before joining the NBA coaching ranks.
