SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's track and field team is preparing for its inaugural season in the Pac-12 Conference with a challenging schedule, announced Wednesday by Utah head coach Kyle Kepler.
"The 2012 track and field schedule will take us to some of the very best meets and facilities country," Kepler said. "This schedule will allow our national-level athletes to compete against the competition they need in order to continue their development. I also believe we have some very good meets scheduled that will allow our younger emerging athletes to make a positive impact, while developing their skills at a new level."
The indoor season features the Utes competing at the Boise State Open at the same facility that will host the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Utes are also slated to compete at the University of Washington's Husky Invitational and the New Balance Invitational in New York City.
"The meets at Washington are always competitive," Kepler said. "Our distance medley relay team was invited to the meet in New York City. Over half or the teams that qualified for the2011 NCAA Championships in that event came from that meet."
The 2012 outdoor season will open up with the Utes competing at the Willie Williams Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. Throughout the course of the season, Utah will compete at four meets hosted by Pac-12 members.
"The outdoor schedule has us competing at several Pac-12 venues, which we will continue to try to do more often in the future," Kepler said. "We will also compete at the 103rd annual Drake Relays, where we have won events at the previous two meets."
The Utes are slated to host their annual Utah Spring Classic for the first time at the McCarthey Family Track and Field.
"It was unfortunate that we had to cancel our first scheduled meet at our new facility last spring due to poor weather conditions," Kepler said. "However, that has given us time to put together an even better meet and environment for the teams and spectators. So we are really looking forward to the inaugural event on April 13."
On May 5, the Utes will appear in the inaugural Pac-12 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
