Putilina, Pham Continue Singles Runs at Regional Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Top-seeded Anastasia Putilina and 11th-seeded Sarah Pham, of the University of Utah women's tennis team, both notched singles wins on the second day of the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, Thursday, to advance to Friday's round of 16, in Las Vegas, Nev. The top-seeded duo of Putilina and sophomore Callie Craig won their two opening matches to move into the doubles round of 16. Day three of the tournament will see the singles and doubles rounds of 16 as well as the singles quarterfinals.
"Anastasia and Sarah both played like two of the best players in the tournament," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I am looking forward to tomorrow's matches."
In singles play, top-seeded, 64th-ranked Putilina defeated BYU's Morgan Anderson 6-3, 6-4, in the third round to advance. The Utah senior takes on Winde Janssens of Colorado in the round of 16. Pham, the No. 11-seed, downed Simona Synkova of Wyoming 6-1, 6-2, in round three to move into the round of 16, where the Ute sophomore will face fifth-seeded Michaela Bezdickova of New Mexico.
Freshman Danielle Flores dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, decision to 10th-seeded Marlena Pietzuch of Boise State in the third round, while freshman Sammie Watson fell to second-seeded, 95th-ranked Lucia Batta of UNLV 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, the top-seeded tandem of Putilina and Craig topped Constance Alexander and Sasha Carter of Montana, 9-7, in the second round after receiving a bye in the first. The duo faces Victoria Lozano and Sophi Vickers of Idaho in the round of 16.
The team of Pham and Watson downed Northern Colorado's Jennifer Whateley and Elizabeth Tapia, 8-1, in the first round before dropping an 8-6 decision to Wyoming's Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva in the second. The freshmen duo of Flores and Natasha Smith fell to Megan Price and Megan Sheehan-Dizon of BYU, 8-2, in the second round after a receiving a bye in the first.
