SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's golf team is preparing the 42nd annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, hosted by the Air Force Academy and held on the Blue Course of the 7,363-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament is scheduled to begin with two rounds on Sunday, starting at 8:00 a.m., and the final round will be held Monday at 8:00 a.m. This will be the Utes' 12th appearance at the Falcon Invitational, hoping to recapture last seasons' stellar second-place finish.
The Field: Eighteen teams will accompany the Utes at this year's invitational, including: Air Force, Air Force JV, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, San Diego, Southern Utah, UCCS, UNLV, Utah State, Utah Valley, UTEP, Weber State and Wyoming.
Last Time: Last season, the Utes completed the Falcon Invitational with a second-place finish out of 19 teams. The Utes shot a third-round score of 293, seven-under-par. Mike Branca tied for third place for a final score of 211 (65, 72, 74), five-under-par. Jeff Kitches tied for 50th with a total score of 223, two strokes behind Derek Adams, who tied for 42nd place with a total score of 221. Chase Hite completed the tournament with a total score of 219, placing 29th.
Utah was just two strokes behind team champion Colorado State, who won the event last season with a three-round total of 855, nine-under-par. Steve Bidne of Northern Colorado took first in the individual standings, 10-under-par, with a score of 206.
Next week: Utah golf will be traveling to Boulder, Colo., to compete in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational Sept. 27-28.
