2008 Canadian Olympian Nansy Damianova has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Utah gymnastics team, Ute co-coaches Greg and Megan Marsden announced today.
"Nansy is exactly the kind of athlete we need to keep this program competitive at the highest level," said Greg Marsden. "She has been well coached, has already accomplished great things and has experience in big-meet pressure situations. She is a beautiful athlete who loves to perform on the sport's biggest stages ... a perfect fit for Utah."
Damianova will compete for the only school to qualify for 35-consecutive national championships, including every NCAA Championship. Utah has won 10 national championships, placed in the top three 22 times and has never finished lower than 10th in the nation. The Utes set a new women's gymnastics attendance record this season, averaging 14,213 fans to their home meets and they hold every gymnastics attendance record (averaging more than 10,000 spectators a meet at home for the last 20 years).
Damianova, from Montreal, Quebec, will join the Utes next fall. She has competed in numerous major international events, including the 2008 Olympic Games. Damianova clinched her Olympic berth at the 2008 Canadian Championships, where she placed first on vault, second on the uneven bars and fourth on floor. Other competition highlights include the 2006 Pacific Alliance Championships, the 2006 Junior Pan Am Championships, the 2007 World Championships and the 2008 Pac Rim Championships.
Damianova competed in her first Canadian championship in 2002 as a novice. She moved up to the junior ranks in 2004. In 2006, while still eligible as a junior, she competed as a senior at the Canadian championships, taking first both bars and vault, while placing second on floor and third on beam and in the all-around. In 2007, she qualified for the World Championships, and in 2008, she represented Canada in the Beijing Olympics. Her recent results include a fifth-place all-around finish at the 2009 Elite Canada meet.
Both Damianova and her club coach Katerine Dussault expressed excitement about the gymnast's decision to sign with the Utes. "I'm very happy and proud to join Utah's prestigious gymnastics program, said Damianova. "As a child, my goal was to compete at the Olympic Games. I put all my time, energy and focus on achieving that goal and I enjoyed every minute in Beijing in 2008. It was a wonderful experience and I'll cherish it forever. After living through this very high intensity journey, I needed a little time to adjust to a new life as a young woman and plan my future. I found that my love of gymnastics was so strong that I couldn't see myself without it. With the help of my coaches and parents, I decided to look into competing at the NCAA level and the University of Utah seems to me the best program to achieve my new goals."
Added Damianova, "I'm very happy to start a new life in Salt Lake City and look forward to joining the team. Training with the girls and competing in front of the best gymnastics crowd I've ever seen will be amazing! Just as I did for 10 years to reach the Olympics, I'm ready to put all my energy, efforts and time on helping the Utah team achieve its goals. I'm very proud to say that I'm a Ute!"
Her club coach Dussault had this to say about Damianova's decision. "The coaching staff at Gymnix and I are very excited and honored to have Nansy Damianova join the NCAA gymnastics program at the University of Utah, starting in September 2010. What a great way for Nansy to pursue her gymnastics career and prepare her future in a prestigious program. We could not be happier for her. In her quest for the Olympic Games, she was dedicated to her training, as well as her studies. This is why I believe that Utah's gymnastics program will suit her. I've been with her since she was three years old and it is with great pride (and a little sorrow) that I see her embark in a new chapter in her life. We wish her all the best!"
Damianova (pronounced Dam-ee-a-nova) attended École Secondaire Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry school, where she won the 2008 Alexandre Despatie Student-Athlete Award. She currently trains at Gymnix for Katerine Dussault, Francine Bouffard and Pierre Privé. She is the daughter of Titomir Damianov and Sophia Tsvetkova. Both parents competed for the Bulgarian national team--her mother as a rower and her father in taekwondo. She was born March 30, 1991 in Paris, France.
