ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (5-11, 0-1) was defeated by New Mexico (6-7, 1-0), 5-2, in their first MWC match of the season. Senior Phillip Eilers and freshman Alex Golding earned Utah's two points from the No. 1 and No. 5 singles positions.
The Lobos captured the doubles points winning from the Nos. 1 and 2 slots. Eilers and Golding were defeated by Jaden Phillips and Phil Anderson, 9-8, and seniors Timmy Allin and Jason Smits fell to Ben Dunbar and Conor Berg, 9-7. Sophomore Benito Suriano and junior Stephen Jacobs captured a win from the No. 3 doubles spot defeating Carl and Joe Wood, 8-6.
In singles Eilers topped Dunbar from the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-6, and Golding downed Wood, 6-4, 7-5, from the No. 5 slot.
The Lobos captured wins from the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 spots. Smits was defeated by Ho, 7-6, 6-2. Suriano won his first set against Phillips, 4-6, and fell short in the second and third, 7-5, 1-0. In the No. 4 position Allin also fell in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, to Anderson. Jacobs was defeated by Berg, 6-4, 7-6.
The Utes continue on the road with their second conference match of the season against Air Force Saturday, April 3 at 10 a.m.
