SALT LAKE CITY - The 55th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (1-3) fell to UC Santa Barbara (2-3), 4-3, Sunday at the Eccles Tennis Center.
The Utes began their second home match of the 2010 season with a win from the No. 1 doubles position. Senior Phillip Eilers and freshman Alex Golding downed Alex Konigsfeldt and Phillip Therp, 8-2.
Senior Timmy Allin and freshman Artem Strunnikov were defeated by Lucas Sudow and Benjamin Recknagel from the No. 2 slot, 8-4, leaving the doubles decision to the No. 3 spot of junior Stephen Jacobs and sophomore Benito Suriano. Jacobs and Suriano were defeated by Scott Hohenstein and Evan Jurgensen, 8-6.
With the Gachos up 1-0 in the match the Utes answered by tying the match from the No. 1 singles slot. Eilers topped Konigsfeldt, 7-5, 6-1. UCSB took the lead from the No. 3 position Dmytro Mamedov was defeated by Taylor Chavez-Goggin, 6-3, 6-2.
In the No. 2 slot, Jason Smits tied the match for Utah at 2-2 topping Hohenstein, 6-4, 7-5. Golding took the Utes into the lead after defeating Recknagel, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, from the No. 4 spot. Allin was defeated by Sudow in the No. 5 position, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Jacobs fell to Jurgensen, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4.
Up next the Utes host a doubles header against Montana State and Idaho State Saturday, Feb. 13. The matches will begin at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
