SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's tennis team (2-3) defeated Wichita State (1-4) in its home opener, by a score of 4-3, Friday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Sophomore Missy Harris clinched the match for the Utes from the No. 4 position by defeating Florentina Hanisch , 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

"We came back in singles and played some very inspired tennis after not doing well in doubles," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Coming away with a solid win really sets us up for this weekend."

In doubles play, junior Evgenia Kryuchkova and sophomore Lisa Johnson defeated Lily Wakim and Isamine Carpen at the No. 3 spot, 8-1. Harris and freshman Paige Miles fell, 8-3, at the No. 2 position to Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu.

Seniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan were topped at the No. 1 spot, 8-6, by Delia Damaschiin and Stephanie Dalmacio, giving the Shockers the doubles point.

In singles play, Johnson defeated Carpen at the No. 6 position 6-0, 3-0 (ret.), tying up the score, 1-1.

Maughan blanked Wakim, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot, making the score, 2-1, in favor of the Utes.

Kryuchkova downed Lazaroiu at the No. 2 position, 6-0, 6-2, putting Utah ahead 3-1.

Harris then clinched the match for the Utes at 4-1.

Miles fell at the No. 3 spot to Damaschiin, 6-3, 7-5, and Monson was topped by Dalmacio at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 7-5, making the final score, 4-3.

The Utes will hit the road to take on No. 17 Arkansas, February 7, followed by Oklahoma State on the 8th.
