Game Notes - Game 11 vs. Butler
HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Utah men's basketball team (7-3) takes on 2010 NCAA runner-up Butler (6-4) Wednesday in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamondhead Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tip-off from the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawaii is set for 9 p.m. MT, and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
Utah is coming off a thrilling 86-84 victory over Boise State that saw the Utes overcome a 16-point second-half deficit. Junior wing Will Clyburn drilled a clutch three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in the game to complete the comeback win. Clyburn finished with a team-high 22 points, one of five Utes to score double-figures in the contest. He also added eight rebounds, one behind the game and career-high nine boards from sophomore wing Shawn Glover.
Clyburn remains Utah's leading scorer and rebounder at 19.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, ranking No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference in each category. Junior guard Josh Watkins is also chipping in 14.8 points per game and leads the Utes with 3.8 assists per contest, ranking among the top 10 in the league in each discipline. The Utes enter the tournament having won four of their last five games. Butler comes to the DHC having won two straight, both at home, which followed back-to-back road losses.
The Bulldogs are led offensively by senior forward Matt Howard, whose 17.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game top the squad in both categories. Shelvin Mack is Butler's second-leading scorer at 14.7 points per contest and leads Butler in assists at 3.6 per game.
Utah is 1-2 away from home this season, while Butler is 2-3. Wednesday's contest will mark the first neutral-site game of the year for both teams.
Utah head coach Jim Boylen, now in his fourth year at the helm for the Utes, owns a 63-45 (.583) record. Butler is coached by Brad Stevens, also in his fourth year, who holds a record of 95-19 (.833).
The Runnin' Utes are 7-7 all-time in non-conference tournament games held in Hawaii, including a 3-2 mark in contests played in Honolulu. Including regular-season games when both Utah and Hawaii were members of the WAC, Utah is 28-14 overall in games played in the Hawaiian Islands.
