UtahUtes.com's weekly chat is designed to get Utah fans interacting with Ute student-athletes. Simply email your questions on any topic you choose to askaute@gmail.com Thursday through Sunday of each week. This week's featured student-athlete is Derek Adams (golf).
After being screened by athletic department personnel, the best questions and the student-athletes' responses will be posted along with your name and hometown at UtahUtes.com on Tuesday each week and will also be included in the weekly Ute Update.
From Alex in Midvale:
You came from Arizona, what drew you to play golf at Utah?
"I was drawn to play golf at Utah because I wanted to be a part of an emerging golf program at a great university. When I visited, Coach [Randall] McCracken toured me around Salt Lake City and the Utah campus and I fell in love with the area."
From Michelle in Taylorsville:
What's your favorite course to play in Salt Lake City?
"My favorite course to play in Salt Lake City is Willow Creek Country Club. My favorite course in Utah is Glen Wild in Park City. I like the setting of both courses and they both have great greens."
From Erin in Reno:
What kind of training does the golf team participate in during the offseason?
"During the offseason, golf practice is limited by the cold weather and the snow on the ground. We practice at Spence Eccles Fieldhouse on campus, mostly hitting shots off mats into nets. When the weather is good, we practice at heated driving ranges. We also workout as a team in Utah's strength and conditioning facility."
From Howard in Phoenix:
You are majoring in finance at Utah. What are your plans after graduation?
"After I earn my degree in finance, I plan to stay in school. I plan to take pre-medicine classes at the University of Utah and ultimately go to medical school."
From Jim in Ogden:
The team co-hosted the Purple and Red Invitational last week. What are the biggest advantages of playing on a familiar course?
"The biggest advantages of playing on a familiar course are being comfortable in the environment and being familiar hitting the required shots. Also, another advantage is having knowledge of the subtle slopes and breaks on the greens. At Valley View, I know the tendency of most putts is to break down off the mountain, which helped my green reading during the tournament."
Next week's featured student-athlete for Ask A Ute will be Hannah Caron of the women's swimming & diving team. Send your questions for Hannah here between now and Sunday, Oct. 24. Utah swimming & diving hosts Denver in its season opener on Oct. 29. Fans can ask Hannah about competing at Ute Natatorium: What are you looking forward to most about competing in your own pool? Do you and your teammates have any special traditions/rituals for home meets?
