PROVO, Utah- The 57th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (9-10, 3-3 MWC) fell to 58th-ranked in-state rival BYU (12-7, 5-1 MWC) Saturday at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.
"We lost a tough college tennis match in a very different venue," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "All the credit goes to BYU, they played very well."
Senior Leigh Walsh and Sophomore Evgenia Kryuchkova downed Elizaveta Ezhova and Romina Nedakovic at the No. 3 position, 8-1. Juniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan were topped at the No. 1 spot to Kristina Doerr and McCall Jones, 8-4.
Freshmen Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson fell to Elle Carney and Megan Price at the No. 2 position, 8-6, giving BYU the doubles point.
In singles play Putilina was topped at the No. 1 spot by 96th-ranked Jones, 6-1, 6-2 and Monson was fell to Doerr at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-2, putting BYU up 3-0.
Kryuchkova downed Nedakovic at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-3, making the score 3-1. Johnson duked it out with Hayasaka at the No. 4 spot winning the first set 6-3, but falling in the second and third, 6-4, 6-4, which clinched the match for BYU at 4-1.
Walsh at the No. 3 position defeated Price in a hard-fought three set match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Maughan at the No. 6 position fell to Carney, 4-6, 6-4, 10-0 making the final score 5-2.
The Utes next action will be against conference foes UNLV and San Diego State April 17-18 in Las Vegas.
