THE MEET
Postseason play begins for the No. 2-ranked Utah gymnastics team on Saturday, April 4 at the NCAA West Region Championship in Seattle. The meet will be hosted by the University of Washington in the Bank of America Arena starting at 6 p.m. PT Time (7 p.m. MDT). Joining the Utes in the West Region are No. 11 Auburn, No. 14 Illinois, No. 19 Boise State, Washington and San Jose State. Online live scoring and video streaming will be provided by UW at gohuskies.com. There is no TV.
TICKETS, OPEN PRACTICE
Tickets in Utah's section at regionals may be purchased online at UtahUtes.com or by phone (801-581-UTIX). Prices are $10 (reserved), $8 (adult general admission) and $6 (student/senior general admission). The Utes will practice from 2:00-3:40 p.m. on Friday, April 3 in the Bank of America Arena. The practice is open to the public.
UTAH AT REGIONALS
This marks the 34th-consecutive regional appearance for the Utes, who have qualified for regionals and nationals every year since becoming a varsity program back in the 1975-76 season. Utah has won 25 regional titles (including 22 of 27 NCAA) and finished second the other years. Utah is aligned with the North Central Region, but is competing in the West Region for the fourth time in the 11 years of the current format. Here's a breakdown of Utah's regional assignments and finishes:
REGION ROTATION
Utah's rotation order at regionals (determined through a random draw by the NCAA) is: Bye, Floor, Vault, Bye, Bars, Beam. Rotating with Utah will be at-large all-arounder Marina Borisova of Sacramento State.
MOVING ON
Utah must place in the top two at the West Region to advance to a record 28th-straight NCAA Championships.
QUICK STICKS
Utah has been the NCAA runner-up for the past three years, placing second to Georgia in 2006, 2007 and 2008... Utah is 5-1 against ranked teams this year, with wins over (then) No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Florida, No. 11 Oregon State, No. 12 Nebraska and No. 15 Michigan. Utah's loss was to Georgia, ranked fourth at the time ... Utah's season-high score of 197.80, set at Brigham Young on Mar. 20, is the second-best score in the nation this year. It is the ninth-best score in school history and the best since 2005 ... The 2009 Utes set an NCAA season attendance record by averaging 13,861 fans to their home meets this season--a figure that included two 15,000-plus crowds. For more, see Full House ... The only program in the nation to qualify for every NCAA Gymnastics Championship, Utah is looking to punch its ticket to a record 28th-straight NCAA Championship. The Utes have made 33 consecutive national championship appearances total, including the AIAW years.
READING THE RANKINGS
Utah enters the 2009 postseason ranked No. 2 in the nation with a 197.190 regional qualifying score (RQS)--less than a tenth of a point behind No. 1 Georgia (197.255 RQS). Utah was ranked No. 1 for three weeks, but has spent most of the season (eight weeks) at No. 2. Utah finished the regular season ranked No. 2 on every apparatus.
UTE NOTES
Kristina Baskett is headed home for the regionals. Baskett hails from nearby Normandy Park, Wash. (Mt. Rainier High School/Puget Sound Gymnastics) ... Jamie Deetscreek is the only Ute without a fall this season (44-44). Utes with just one fall are Nina Kim (41-42) and
Stephanie McAllister (22-23) ... Ute individual winners are Baskett (29), Kim (11), Annie DiLuzio (7), Daria Bijak (4), Deetscreek (2),
Gael Mackie (2) and
Kyndal Robarts (2) ... Baskett and Deetscreek have gone all-around in all 11 meets ... Baskett leads Utah with 28 scores of 9.90 or better (10 on bars, 9 on vault, 5 on beam, 4 on floor). Other 9.90 leaders are Kim with 14 (6 on beam, 5 on vault, 2 on floor, 1 on bars) and Bijak with nine (4 on bars, 3 on floor, 1 on beam, 1 on vault).
SHE IS THE CHAMPION
Senior Kristina Baskett has three postseason gold medals, including the 2006 NCAA championship on the uneven bars as a freshman. Baskett's other postseason titles came at regionals, where she won the vault in both 2006 (West Region) and 2008 (North Central Region).
