SALT LAKE CITY- The 50th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (2-3) defeated Weber State (1-5), 7-0 Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Freshman Lexi Provancha, playing at the No. 6 spot, earned the clinching point by topping Elsje Beneke, 6-0, 6-0.
"It's always good to get a win," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "While we were the more talented team, I was impressed with the way Weber State performed. We have a few things to work on before Thursday's much anticipated match against regional rival Boise State."
At the No. 2 position in doubles play Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh defeated Keya Jenkins and Greyce Farias 8-1. Second to finish was Erin Monson and Karine Bourdages topping Elsje Beneke and Karlie Hancock in the No. 3 spot, 8-1, giving Utah a 1-0 lead over Weber State.
Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson fell at the No. 1 position to Brittiny Moore and Caroline Drugge, 8-5.
In singles play Walsh earned Utah's second point at the No. 5 spot by topping Hancock, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 position Monson put the Utes up 3-0 by defeating Jenkins, 6-0, 6-1, which set up Provancha's win as the clinching point.
Putilina then topped Farias at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2, extending Utah's lead to 5-0. In the No. 2 position Kryuchkova defeated Drugge, 6-3, 6-2 and Johnson won over Moore at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 7-6 to give the Utes their 7-0 win.
For their next action Utah will host regional rival Boise State Thursday February 12 at 2:30 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
