SALT LAKE CITY- The No. 51 Utah women's tennis team (3-3) defeated regional rival No. 37 Boise State (6-2), 4-3, in a nail biter of a match Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Eccles Tennis Center. Senior Leigh Walsh clinched the match for the Utes with her 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Bianca Jochimsen.
"As I have said before, Boise State in one of the premiere programs in the central region," stated head coach Mat Iandolo. "They are also ranked in the top 40 in the nation and to get a win over them says a lot about where our program is. We are going to use this win as a catalyst for a great season.
"Senior Leigh Walsh coming through with the clinching point shows how far she has come in keeping her cool during the hottest stages of competition," continued Iandolo. "Also, having three freshmen coming through and win in straight sets says a lot about our future."
Playing at the No. 2 position in doubles, Junior Evgenia Kryuchkova and Walsh were defeated by Vivian Silfany and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 8-2. At the No. 1 spot Freshmen Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson were unable to over come Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale, falling 9-7, putting the Broncos up 1-0 over the Utes.
Juniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan playing in the No. 3 position over powered Laura Baum and Jochimsen, 8-7 (7).
In singles play Kryuchkova fell to Megale at the No. 2 position, 6-0, 6-0, putting BSU up 2-0. Second to finish at the No. 6 spot was freshman Lexi Provancha defeating Rocio Frej, 6-2, 6-2 giving Utah its first point.
At the No. 3 position Monson was defeated by Silfany, 6-4, 6-0, putting the Broncos up 3-1 on the Utes. Putilina earned the Utes next point by defeating the 104th-ranked singles player Thongdach at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 7-5, making the score 3-2.
Johnson at the No. 4 position duked it out with Wlodarczyk, topping her 6-4, 6-4, tying up the score 3-3, making way for Walsh to clinch the match.
For their next action Utah will host Notre Dame Feb. 22 at 11:00 a.m. MT at the Eccles Tennis Center.
