SALT LAKE CITY - Behind Katie King's sixth double-double of the season, the Utah women's basketball team engineered a comeback 59-54 victory over Brigham Young on Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Huntsman Center.
King had 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Morgan Warburton led Utah with 18 points while Kalee Whipple tallied 15.
Utah struggled in the opening minutes, going down by 13 points early, 21-8. However, the Utes rallied to close out the first half on a 22-8 run over the final eight minutes to take a 30-29 halftime lead. King led the Utes with 10 points in the half, while Warburton had nine, with most of those points coming during the comeback drive.
Although Utah held as much as an eight-point lead in the second half, the score was tied four times and the lead changed four times. With the score tied with six minutes remaining, 49-49, the Utes went on a 5-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish on the heels of a free-throw from Warburton and four points (a basket and two free-throws) from Whipple to go up, 54-49.
With 2:30 remaining and the Utes up 56-51, BYU's Coriann Wood hit a three-point basket to pull the game within two before King made her first three-point shot of the season on the other end to keep the lead at five, 59-54, with 1:59 left. The defenses took control down the stretch, as neither team made another basket.
Whipple had a team-high 12 points in the second half for the Utes.
BYU had three players in double-digit scoring, led by Mindy Nielson's 14 points. Shawnee Slade scored 13 points while Jazmine Foreman had 11.
The victory clinched a Utah win in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series. The Utes lead the 65.5 point series, 34-8 (score before the men's basketball game in the afternoon). Today's game was worth five points of the overall total.
Utah plays its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, March 4, against New Mexico. The Utes three seniors - Warburton, King and Deanne Stevenson - will be honored before the game.
