WACO, Texas- The University of Utah men's tennis team (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season against No. 10 Baylor (2-1), 7-0, in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Friday.

"It was a tough match against a top ten opponent," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "It was our first match outdoors at sea level since last April. We started out poorly and got back in some of the matches, but against a top 10 opponent it was too little too late. Hopefully we learn from the match today in preparation for Sunday's match against San Diego State."

In doubles action, Benito Suriano and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti fell to Dominik Mueller and Maros Horny, 8-0, in the No. 3 position. Clinching the doubles point for the Bears was the pair of Attila Bucko and Julian Bley topping the Ute duo of Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin, 8-5.

Phillip Eilers and John Taylor were defeated in the No. 1 position, 5-3, by Denes Lukacs and Jordan Rux.

In singles, No. 71 Mueller topped sophomore John Taylor, 6-1, 6-0, winning the second match point for Baylor. Setting the Bears up for the win was No. 13 Rux defeating Hancock, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 position.

Delivering the match win at, 4-0, was Bley who defeated Suriano in the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-0.

After Baylor clinched the win the Utes continued to struggle against the Bears. In the No. 1 position No. 21 Lukacs defeated Eilers, 6-1, 7-5. Jason Smits was defeated by Horny, 6-3, 6-4, giving the Bears a 6-0 lead.

Junior Ouariti playing in the No. 5 position against No. 40 Bucko held on in the second set before coming up short, 6-2, 7-6, giving Baylor a 7-0 final score.

Up next, the Utes will face No. 57 San Diego State (0-2) on Sunday Feb. 1 in Waco. The Aztecs fell to No. 58 Georgia Tech (3-1), 4-1, Friday. Baylor will go on to face Georgia Tech Saturday Jan. 31.
