SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah golf team heads to Albuquerque, N.M., Friday and Saturday for the 54th William H. Tucker Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, held on the 7,403-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course. Tournament play will begin at 7:30 a.m., on Friday with 36 holes and end Saturday with 18 holes.
The Field: The following schools will compete with Utah at the 2008 Invitational: Air Force, Arizona, BYU, Campbell, Colorado, Hawaii, No. 22 UNLV, New Mexico, Ohio State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UTEP, UT-San Antonio, Texas State, and Wyoming. Ten of 10 teams Utah will be up against teams who competed at the invitational last year.
The Last Time: Last year, the Utes finished fifth of 17 teams competing, placing them behind the eventual first-place team, Pepperdine. In the individual final standings, Nic Larson finished fourth for Utah at three-under-par, while Jesse Barnsley of Pepperdine finished first at 12-under-par.
Last Week: In its last meet, Utah finished 13th (291-303-313) at the Ron Moore Golf Invitational, Sept. 16. Leading the Utes with a final score that finished three strokes over par was sophomore Chase Hite (Tucson, Ariz.), who finished the tournament tied for 26th in the overall standings.
Hite, with an average of 74 in the three-day event, finished 17th in the standings, while Chance Cota (San Diego) and Jeff Kitchens (Salt Lake City) both tied for 23rd with averages of 76. Freshman Kaleb Mahanes (Erie, Colo.) finished 28th along with sophomore Mike Branca (Salt Lake City), averaging 78.67. Utah's individual stroke average is 75.58 with a team average of 302.33.
