THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah golf team heads to Scottsdale, Ariz. to compete in the sixth-annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic presented by Cleveland Golf. The par 70 event will be held at the Talking Stick Golf Club, April 7-8. Monday will feature 36 holes, and 18 holes will be played Tuesday. Play will begin each day with 7:45 a.m. shotgun starts. UC Davis was the team medalist in 2007.
The Utah lineup for the Cowboy Classic will include Nic Larson, Nick Carter, Steve Broker, Chance Cota and Chris Gresh. In 2007, the Utes finished second at the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale Ariz. Utah was led by Chris Gresh, whose scores of 72, 69 and 68 on the par 70 course were good enough for a fifth-place finish at one-under. Dustin Pimm finished tied with Gresh at one-under-par.

The field for the 2008 Cowboy Classic includes Arizona, Boise State, Cal-Riverside, College of Charleston, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Kennesaw St., New Mexico, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Old Dominion, Oregon State, Southern Utah, UC Davis, UCLA, UCSB, Utah, Utah Valley St., UTEP, UTPA, Weber State, Western Kentucky, Wyoming. PIMM TURNS PRO:
Utah senior Dustin Pimm announced March 30 his plans to accept an invitation to play on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour. Pimm will lose his eligibility and miss the season's last three events, being replaced on Utah's roster by Nick Carter. Pimm competed in a tour qualifying event March 25-27 in San Diego, and received a qualifying card after finishing ninth overall.
"[The tour] said, `Either take it or leave it,'" Pimm said. "After a lot of thought, and a lot of people supporting me, I decided to take it." Golf coach Randall McCracken said he supports his senior's decision, and steered him toward turning pro. "This is definitely the best decision for Dustin," he said. The senior said he plans to complete his bachelor's degree sometime next year.
