Three Utes will go after NCAA individual event titles tonight in Athens, Ga. Senior Ashley Postell, the 2007 NCAA balance beam champion, will compete on bars, beam and floor; junior Kristina Baskett, the 2006 NCAA bar champion, has qualified on vault, bars and floor; and freshman Kyndal Robarts earned a place in vault finals. Event finals start with introductions at 6 p.m. EDT.
The trio combined to win 10 of the 12 All-America citations earned by Utes during Thursday's preliminary qualifying session. In addition to bars, beam and floor, Postell won first-team honors in the all-around by placing second. She was a second-team All-American on the vault. Along with first-team honors on vault, bars and floor, Baskett was a first-team All-American in the all-around, tying for third. The individual event qualifiers will compete one at a time, alternating between two apparatus. The first half will feature the vault and bar competition, followed by beam and floor. There are two flights and 11 total gymnasts on vault, three flights and 18 total gymnasts on bars, two flights and 11 total gymnasts on beam, and two flights and 14 total gymnasts on floor. Gymnasts qualified into the event finals by placing in the top four (including ties) of their respective preliminary sessions on Thursday.
The gymnast order for each event was determined by a blind draw conducted by NCAA representatives. Robarts will be the third gymnast on the vault. On bars, Postell is the third gymnast in the second flight (No. 9 overall), while Baskett drew the fifth spot in the second flight (No. 11 overall). On beam, Postell is the sixth and final gymnast in the first flight. Another flight of five will follow. On floor, Baskett is the first gymnast in the second flight (No. 8 overall), while Postell drew the 14th and final position.
It will mark the final competition for Postell - the most decorated gymnast in NCAA history with a record 20 All-America awards (the maximum possible). Earlier in the day, Postell was named the AAI Outstanding Senior Gymnast of the Year on a vote by the NCAA women's gymnastics coaches.
