LOS ANGELES - Utah closed out the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational on a solid note, with several athletes performing well in several invite events.
"We did much better today than we did on Friday," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The same people who stepped up today have been the ones to step up all season, but we need to be more consistent and have some of our younger kids start to be the ones to step up and do some of the things that they have shown in practice."
Alyssa Abbott (4:28.85) and Chelsea DiGrazia (4:29.96) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500 meter run. Both ran personal best times and were close to regional qualifying times. Shayla Houlihan also ran a PR in the event with an eighth-place finish of 4:36.68.
Chelsea Shapard finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.68. She has already qualified regionally in the event.
The 4x100 team of Liza Whitehead, Whitney Wellington, Haley McAllister and Ashley Patterson clocked in a time of 47.48 with a seventh-place finish. Utah's 4x400 team of Patterson, Chelsey Kaplar, Wellington and Shapard placed seventh with a time of 3:46.59.
The Utes also sent a group of athletes to Weber State.
Utah returns to action on April 16 at the Mt. Sac Relays.
