PROVO, UTAH - The University of Utah (56) pulled out a big win on Friday against San Diego State at BYU's indoor tennis facility. The Utes walked away with a 4-3 win that finally broke Utah's losing streak of over seven years against the Aztecs. The Utes are now 10-5 this season and 1-0 in conference play.
"I am very excited about this win. It is the first time we've beat San Diego State in years," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It was a break through win and sets us up for a good match against UNLV tomorrow."
The Utes swept doubles play with ease at the top spots. No. 41 Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok knocked down Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Leigh Walsh and Evgenia Kryuchkova took on Kathryn Kitts and Julia Trunk for an 8-2 win to earn the doubles point for Utah.
Andrea Maughan and Erin Monson finished up in doubles play at the No. 3 spot against Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov. The Ute duo struggled to tame the Aztecs, but finished out strong to earn an 8-6 win.
In singles play, the Utes gave a valiant effort to earn wins at every position, however, it was Ferris, Kryuchkova, and Bourdages that sealed the overall victory for Utah.
Ferris, currently ranked No. 43 in the country, took on Holly Bagshaw from San Diego State at the top spot. The Ute outplayed the Aztec to earn a swift and easy 6-2, 6-1 win over Bagshaw to get things started.
At the No. 2 spot, Kryuchkova battled Julia Trunk from the Aztec's squad. Trunk battled in the first set, but the Ute overpowered her in the second set to earn a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
San Diego State stepped up their games, winning three matches to tie things up. The Utes were depending on Bourdages to pull through for them at the No. 6 spot against Sisse Nielsen. Bourdages and Nielsen wore eachother down in the first set, but the Ute slid by with a 7-5 win. In the second set, Bourdages found her bearings and laid it all out on the court for her team. The Ute battled hard to take the win 7-5, 6-3.
The Utes earned a 4-3 win over San Diego State. Utah will face No. 62 UNLV on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. MST.
