GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The University of Utah men's golf team turned in the second-best round in Sunday's final day at the Ron Moore Invitational. The Utes' final-round total of 281 was enough to catapult them into a third-place finish at the 16-team event, which was hosted by Denver University.
Utah entered Sunday's play in eighth place. But Dustin Pimm fired a five-under par 67 to lead Utah's charge into the top three on Sunday. Pimm finished the tournament four-under par and in a tie for 14th place. Also tied for 14th for the Utes was Chance Cota, who was four-under Friday and then carded back-to-back even par rounds Saturday and Sunday.
Kansas State took the team title with a score of 845, just two strokes in front of Ohio State and six better than Utah. Boise State finished fourth, just one stroke behind Utah. The Broncos had the top two finishers in the tournament, with Troy Merritt winning his second straight Ron Moore Invite individual title.
Utah also got a nice third round from Nic Larson, who carded a three-under 69. His three-day total of 214 tied him for 20th place overall. Chris Gresh finished his tournament with a 74 Sunday and a three-round mark of 220 (+6). Steve Broker finished the tournament at seven-over par with a three-day score of 221, after his Sunday total of 73.
Utah's third-place finish was its best of the spring season. The Utes are back in action again April 7-8 at the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
