MORAGA, CALIF. - The University of Utah men's tennis team had a rough start to their weekend as they fell 5-2 to Saint Mary's College California on Friday. Miron Mann and Timmy Allin played well to close out wins for Utah. Allin and Wes Hancock won their doubles match.
Allin and Hancock played at the No. 3 doubles position on Friday against Achim Christner and Gerald Ellison from the Gaels' squad. The Ute duo shut them down with an 8-4 victory. That was the only win in doubles for the Utes on Friday. Zach Ganger and Miron Mann fell 8-5 to Marek Dvorak and Joel Kuznierz at the top spot. Andrea Zannoni and Lucas Tirelli from the Gaels defeated Othman Zerouali-Ouariti and Amit Maharaj 8-4 at the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, Mann stepped up his game at the No. 2 spot as he faced Tirelli from Saint Mary's. The Ute played for a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win over the Gael. At the No. 6 slot, Allin stepped in to battle Yousseff El Bouzkouri from the Gael's squad. El Bouzkouri took the first set 6-4, giving Allin some motivation to step it up. The Ute shot back with a 6-2 in the second, and a 6-3 win in the third set.
Thoughts on the Match from assistant coach Roeland Brateanu:
"We played a good and competitive team today and came up short. It was our first match outdoors and at lower altitude and some of our guys struggled with it today. Let's just keep it simple: we did not play up to our capabilities and strengths. If you don't do that you will not beat a good team. It's that simple!"
"I would like to congratulate Miron [Mann] with a good victory. He looks like he is on the way back to being his old self. Timmy did a fantastic job today fighting back after losing the first set and changing his game plan. He came out of his comfort zone to win a match and we really like to see that!"
"Tomorrow we will play a highly favored team: California Berkeley. They are a historic national powerhouse with a great tradition. All of our players need to play a lot better if we want to have a chance to win."
