BERKELEY, CALIF. - The University of Utah men's tennis team had another rough tumble in California on Saturday against University of California-Berkeley. The No. 70 Utes dropped a 5-2 decision to the No. 28 Bears at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

The Utes started strong in doubles play against the California Bears, posting wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Zach Ganger and Miron Mann stepped in at the top spot to take on Eoin Heavey and Pierre Mouillon. The Ute duo allowed four points, but stopped them there to pull out an 8-4 win.

At No. 2 doubles, the Cal duo overtook Jason Smits and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti in a tie breaker for a 9-8(3) win. The doubles point was determined at No. 3 doubles, where Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin battled their hearts out against Jonathan Dahan and Kallim. The two battled back and forth, but Utah pushed on ahead to take the win at 9-7.

Heading into singles play, and the Utes up 1-0, California stepped up their game. The Utes were only able to sink one win in singles play, as the Bears defended their home courts on Saturday. Ganger faced Stewart at the top spot for a gruesome three-set battle. The Ute took the first set at 7-5, only to be answered back with a 6-2 win in the second set from Stewart. The two dug deep to pull out the win, but it was Ganger that pushed harder in the end. The Ute walked away with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 win.

"Today we started off a lot better. We won the doubles point with wins at number one and number two; we could have won at number two doubles as well. After that, Cal turned up their spirits a bunch and intimidated most of our guys. This is a good lesson for us! Zach led the way for us by winning at number one singles. We need to learn how to have more guys simultaneously step up and help us win a match."
