Scouting South Dakota State
South Dakota State is 2-0 this season after defeating Wisconsin (64-44) and Missouri (55-50). The squad is led by first-team Summit League selection Jennifer Warkenthien, who led the Jackrabbits to a Summit League regular season title last year. She had a team-high 15 points in SDSU's season-opener against Missouri.
Aaron Johnston is in his ninth season at South Dakota State.
Utah won the only other meeting between the two squads, a 67-59 win last year in Salt Lake City.
Last Time Out
Four players recorded double figures in scoring as the Utah women's basketball team opened its season with a 77-49 victory over Jackson State on Monday, Nov. 17. Morgan Warburton led the Utes with 18 points, adding seven rebounds and a team-best three steals. Kalee Whipple had 16 points and five rebounds. Katie King pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in addition to her 15 points. Halie Sawyer was the final player in double figures with 13 points.
Utah was 12-of-13 from the free-throw line and out-rebounded Jackson State 44-to-26. Freshman Hannah Stephens made her first career start at point guard while freshman Janita Badon also saw time at the point. Each athlete had five assists.
1,000 Games and Counting...
Utah will play its 1,000th game in women's basketball history against South Dakota State. The Utes are 723-276 (.723) since the 1974-75 season.
Utes Receiving Votes
Utah is receiving votes in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Poll. Connecticut leads both polls.
The Warburton-Whipple Combo
Morgan Warburton and Kalee Whipple are arguably the best wing combo in the Mountain West Conference.
In 2007, the duo finished first and second in the league in three-point field goal percentage, with Whipple shooting .441 and Warburton hitting .424. Warburton was second in the league in scoring (17.2 points per game). She also led the team with a .861 free-throw percentage. Whipple was second in the league in field goal percentage (.496) and finished fifth in the conference in both scoring (14.7 points per game) and rebounding (7.3 rebounds per game).
Warburton Reaches 1,000
Morgan Warburton is the only current player in the MWC who is already at 1,000 career points. She has 1,293, which ranks 12th all-time at Utah. Warburton needs three more points to tie Sandy Kovach (1979-83) for 11th on the all-time list at Utah.
Playing the Point
With the graduation of last year's point guard and current WNBA player Leilani Mitchell, the Utes will rely on freshmen Hannah Stephens and Janita Badon to step into that role. Stephens started both the season opener and exhibition game while Badon also saw significant minutes on the floor in both games. Against Jackson State, each had five assists.
