Utes Open Season With 77-49 Win Over Jackson State

SALT LAKE CITY - Four players recorded double figures in scoring as the Utah women's basketball team opened its season with a 77-49 victory over Jackson State on Monday, Nov. 17, in the Huntsman Center.
Morgan Warburton led the Utes with 18 points, adding seven rebounds and a team-best three steals. Kalee Whipple had 16 points and five rebounds. Katie King pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in addition to her 15 points. Halie Sawyer was the final player in double figures with 13 points.
Although Utah held as much as a 12 point lead in the first half, Jackson State made a late rally in the last two minutes of the half to cut the lead to four, 34-30. Beatrice Banks led the Lady Tigers in points at the half with eight, while Whipple put up 11 for the Utes.
The Utes began to take control in the second half. Up 47-38 with 14 minutes remaining, Warburton hit a three-pointer to start a nine-point run over the next four minutes to give Utah a 56-38 lead. The Utes would continue to pull away from there, as they would outscore Jackson State 43-19 in the second half.
Utah was 12-of-13 from the free-throw line and out-rebounded Jackson State 44-to-26.
Freshman Hannah Stephens made her first career start at point guard while freshman Janita Badon also saw time at the point. Each athlete had five assists.
Jackson State was led by 10 points from Banks.
Utah travels to South Dakota State for its next game on Thursday, Nov. 20. Tip is at 7:00 pm CT (6:00 pm MT).
