SALT LAKE CITY, Utah.- The University of Utah golf team returns to action at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Oct. 27-28 in Las Cruces, N.M., at the New Mexico State University Golf Course. Monday and wraps up Tuesday with the final 18 holes. Each day begins at 8 a.m.
The Field: The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate is made up of 18 teams, including Air Force, Miami (Ohio), Iowa State, Kansas State, UTEP, Nevada, New Mexico State, Denver, Nebraska, Ball State, Northern Colorado, Akron, Washington State, Cal-Poly, Idaho, Weber State, Colorado and host New Mexico State.
Last Time: The last time the Utes competed in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate was Oct. 31, 2005, when they tied for 11th place after shooting a three-round score of 886. Current golfers Chance Cota (San Diego, Calif.), who tied for 71st, and Mike Branca (Salt Lake City), who tied for 76th place, are the only Utes who have competed in this tournament.
Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Classic: In its last meet, Utah took 16th at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Classic, Oct. 4-5. Cota had a final 18-hole score of 71, finishing at 12-over-par to tie for 35th. Kaleb Mahanes (Erie, Colo.) ended the tournament tied for 56th with a final combined score of 233 (81, 75, 77).
Matching the 77 final-round score of Mahanes was freshman Joe Webber (Sandy, Utah), who completed the tournament at 19-over-par with a score of 235. Chase Hite (Tucson, Ariz.) tied for 81st at 23-over-par and a final score of 239 (79, 80, 80).
Finishing the tournament at 24-over-par, shooting a score of 240, was sophomore Jeff Kitches (Salt Lake City), who tied for 84th.
