LAYTON, Utah -- The University of Utah battled cold and rainy conditions Monday to claim first place at the Purple and Red Invitational. The team ended the first round of play at five-under-par, three strokes ahead of second-place Santa Clara.
"Today was a big step in the right direction," head coach Randall McCracken said. "Things are starting to come together for us."
Senior Chris Gresh paced the Utes in round one, carding a four-under 68 to finish tied for second place. Senior Nic Larson and junior Chance Cota finished tied for 13th at one-under-par. Senior Dustin Pimm is one-over-par.
Tournament officials cancelled the second round due to inclement weather.
