SALT LAKE CITY - Two University of Utah track and field athletes will be competing this weekend as Alyssa Abbott runs in the US Junior National Championships and Amanda Feigt competes in the US Championships on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.
"For Amanda, this meet will be a great way for her to end her season and collegiate career representing the University of Utah," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "And this will be another invaluable championship experience for Alyssa. She will be running against the best juniors (under 20) in the U.S."
As a true freshmen Abbott finished sixth at the Mountain West Conference Championship and ran a personal best time of 2:09.45, which qualified her for the NCAA West Region Championships. At the West Region meet she claimed 17th place with a time of 2:11.26.
The top-two finishers in each event of the junior championships qualify to compete at the World Junior Championships later this summer as members of the U.S. Junior National team. Those athletes who finish third, fourth, or fifth and meet the event qualifying standard will have the opportunity to be selected to represent the U.S. July 6-8 at the Pan America Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Feigt enters the U.S. Championships fresh off a 21st place finish in the heptathlon and a fifth-place finish in the 400 hurdles at the NCAA Regional Championships. There, she ran a lifetime best 58.67 which garnered her All-West Region honors.
The top-three finishers in each event will represent the United States at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan in late August.
