THIS WEEK: The University of Utah Track and Field team will have one last chance to fine-tune their performances before the Mountain West Conference Championships as it travels to Ogden, Utah, for the Wildcat Tune-up hosted by Weber State.
LAST TIME OUT: The Utes had a great weekend as they split up to participate in the Drake Relays in Moines, Iowa, and the Robison Invitational in Provo, Utah. At the Drake Relays, the 4x100 relay team of Ashley Patterson, Amanda Feigt, Alyssa Abbott, and Chelsea Shapard combined to run 3:44.71 for the Utes. That time broke the school record set less than a month ago. Senior Amanda Feigt had her best long jump series of the season as she placed sixth and hit another NCAA regional qualifying mark of 6.00 meters (19-8.25) on her final attempt.
Some injuries occurred over the weekend as the second runner in the 4x100m relay, Whitney Wellington, injured her hamstring. Wellington is expected to miss about two weeks, but should be able to compete at the conference championships. Later in the afternoon senior pole vaulter Susan Atwater dislocated her left ankle after landing in the pit awkwardly on a failed attempt. It may keep her out of the conference championships, but there is optimism that she could compete in the NCAA West Regional championships in a month.
In the 400m hurdles, Feigt ran a season best time of 59.61 to finish ninth overall, while Shapard ran 60.22, which landed her in 11th place. The quartet of Cutrer, Haley McAllister, Patterson, and Abbott finished 12th in the sprint medley relay (200-200-400-800) with a time of 4:00.97.
Top performers at BYU consisted of Sarah McFee in the triple jump (fourth, 36-00.25), Chelsey Kaplar in the 400m hurdles (fifth, 62.67) and Kellie Anderson in the 5k (eighth, 18;01.04). The top throwers consisted of Sarah Cardinal in the discus (third, 142-04) shot put (third, 43-8.5) and hammer (fourth, 158-9). Becky Riddle placed fourth in her flight in the hammer as well with a distance of 172-06 which was only 4.5 feet shy of an NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Kyle Kepler: "This meet serves as a final tune-up prior to the conference championships which start next week. We will only send a small group of athletes who we believe need to continue working on their event(s). It also gives us one last opportunity to gauge some of our younger athlete's development."
NEXT WEEK: The Utes will head to San Diego, Calif., for the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships on May 9-12.
