COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (72) played the San Diego State Aztecs (52) on Friday for a tough 3-4 loss.
The Utes started the day off on a high note by earning the doubles point. Zach Ganger and Miron Mann faced No. 14 Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh at the top spot. The Utes shut down the ranked Aztecs with an 8-4 win. Wes Hancock and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti stepped in at the No. 2 slot to face Anthony Gomez and Achim Ceban. The match came down to the wire, but the Utes pulled out the win with a 9-8(4) victory. Jason Smits and Timmy Allin finished out the doubles competition at the No. 3 slot. The Ute duo faced Juan Gomez and Robert Sabo for a close match, ending with a 9-8(5) victory for the Utes.
The Utes were on a roller coaster ride throughout singles play on Friday. No. 57 Ganger stepped up to face No. 30 Markus Dickhardt at the top spot. The Ute took control of the match to defeat the Aztec 7-5, 6-3. At the No. 3 slot, Hancock battled Anthony Gomez. The Ute put up a good fight against Gomez, but it was the Aztec that took the win at 7-5, 6-4.
Zerouali-Ouariti finished up next at the No. 4 slot. The Ute faced Achim Ceban from the Aztecs. Ceban slid by in the first set to manage a 7-6(2) win, but Zerouali-Ouariti stepped up to take the second set 6-2. The tie-breaker was rough for the Ute, who only won one game. Ceban took the match 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-1.
Allin represented the Utes at the No. 6 slot, where he faced Robert Sabo from San Diego State. Sabo took the first set 6-4, but Allin answered back with a 6-4 win in the second to split the sets and send them into a tie-breaker. The Aztec got back into his groove and ended the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Allin.
Smits faced Juan Gomez at the No. 5 slot for a three-set battle. The Ute took the first set 7-5 and kept fighting in the second set, but Gomez pulled ahead to take the set 7-6. The tie breaker ended with Gomez taking the set and match at 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
Mann finished up the day for the Utes at the No. 2 slot where he faced Groh from the Aztecs. The Ute took the first set with a clean 6-4 win, and kept pushing into the second set, but it wasn't enough to keep the Aztec down. Groh took the second set at 7-6. The tie breaker ended with an intense win in Mann's favor. The Ute took the match 6-4, 6-7, 7-6(2) over Groh.
