The University of Utah women's tennis team played their second match of conference play on Friday against the Colorado State Rams for a 6-1 victory.
Utah's doubles teams stepped up in the heat of conference play again after earning the doubles point over BYU last week.. Emily Kirchem and Hilary Tyler from the Rams defeated Cheyenne Reveche and Emily Kwok 8-3 at the No. 1 slot, however, the Utes were determined to take the doubles advantage.
Karine Bourdages and Andrea Maughan stepped in at the No. 3 slot to face Kirsten Stople and Anette Pohjalainen from Colorado State. The Ute duo smashed a powerful 8-2 win over the Rams. In a winning continuation, Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh came in at the No. 2 slot to face Laura Neal and Lauren Strasburger from the Rams. The Ute duo took the match 8-3 over the Ram's duo.
The Utes played a high-level match over the Rams in singles play as well. Kwok finished up first at the No. 2 slot with a straight 6-1, 6-1 win over Lauren Strasburger. Facing Greer Satherlie at the No. 6 slot, Bourdages hit a 6-3, 6-0 win to advance the Utes to 3-0.
Freshman Andrea Maughan represented the Utes at the No. 5 slot against Annette Pohjalainen from the Rams. Maughan stepped up to take the Ram 6-3, 6-2. With the Utes 4-0, it was Hilary Tyler from Colorado State that broke up the powerful run Utah was on. At the No. 4 slot, Tyler and Reveche battled for a 7-5, 6-3 win in the Ram's favor.
Next to finish was Walsh at the No. 3 slot, where she faced Laura Neal from the Rams. The Ute took the first set 6-2, but Neal wasn't going down without a fight. The Ram took the second set 6-3 over Walsh. The Ute came back into the third set ready to take the win. Walsh finished Neal off with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Finishing what the Ute squad had started, Ferris stepped in at the No. 1 slot to face Emily Kirchem. The Ute took the first set with a perfect 6-0 win and tried to hold on in the second set, but Kirchem took the set 6-4. Ferris, however, had the last word as she took the third set and match 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
