PROVO, Utah -
Ashley Postell and the No. 6 Ute gymnasts started slowly but finished with a flourish to beat No. 23 Brigham Young 196.725-194.600. The Utes didn't look like they were headed for a score that would tie their season high when All-Americans Postell and Baskett fell off the top bar on the first event. But Postell rebounded sharply, and along with Nicolle Ford, led Utah to its best second half score of the year.
Postell won the final three events, scoring a 9.90 on vault, a 9.925 on floor and a near-perfect 9.975 on the balance beam as Utah's final competitor. Ford won the all-around with a 39.50, and the bars with a 9.90.
Plenty of Utes contributed to the comeback, including Kristina Baskett (9.85 on vault and floor and 9.90 on floor), Annie DiLuzio (9.90 on vault and 9.85 on floor) and Nina Kim (9.80 on vault, 9.85 on beam).
Here's how the meet played out. Unlike previous meets where a big first half was followed by falls on either beam or floor, Utah wasted no time getting into trouble, though Nina Kim (9.85), Jessica Duke (9.775) and Bijak (9.825) did a nice job to start the set. Ironically, uneven bar All-Americans Postell and Baskett both suffered fluke falls. Postell's grip appeared to turn on her in the middle of a great routine, causing her to jump off the top bar. Baskett also seemed en route to her usual big score (she is ranked third in the nation this week), before she slipped off the top bar. Ford, Utah's most consistent bar worker this year, showed no sign of distress with her 9.90 routine but the damage was done.
The outlook improved on the vault, where DiLuzio tied her season high with a 9.90 and Postell uncorked a huge 9.90 vault of her own. Utah tossed a 9.775 and took the lead 98.00-97.675 after two.
The Utes stepped up their game again when they went to the floor. Particularly impressive were Baskett (9.90) and Postell (9.925) to finish the set. Both received standing ovations, and for Postell, it was arguably her biggest, best floor routine of the season. Preceding them were 9.85s by DiLuzio and Ford. Only Stephanie Neff, from the No. 2 position experienced the problems that have plagued the Utes on floor all year - falling out of bounds on the very last element of her routine. A season-best 49.300, combined with a tough night on the beam for the Cougars, gave Utah an pretty much insurmountable 147.300-145.400 lead after three.
Utah capped a great second half by producing its best beam score of the season - a 49.425. For the first time all season, the Utes topped 49.00 on beam and floor on the same night. Although everyone came up big, Utah was especially strong at the beginning and end of the lineup. Baskett and Kim opened up with 9.85s and Ford and Postell closed with a 9.925 and 9.975, respectively. The end result was a season-best 49.425.
