THIS WEEK: The Utah golf team will continue the 2006-2007 season Monday and Tuesday at the Purple and Red Invitational in Layton, Utah. The lineup for this week will feature Chris Gresh, Nick Carter, Nicholas Larson, Steven Broker and Dustin Pimm. Freshmen Jeff Kitches, Christopher Celio-Elia and Derek Adams will also compete as individuals.
Utah performed well in this tournament last season, placing fourth in a field of 16 teams. The Purple and Red Invitational is the lone in-state tournament Utah will compete in this fall.
THE FIELD: The invitational will include 16 teams, including in-state rivals Weber State, Utah State, Southern Utah and Utah Valley State, as well as regional rivals Idaho, Boise State, Idaho State and Wyoming.
LOOKING BACK ON LAST WEEK: Utah enjoyed a strong first day at the Gene Miranda Invitational, but struggled on the final day, finishing ninth overrall. On the last five holes, Utah was +13 as a team. The Utes were led by Steve Broker, who ended the tournament at -3, placing ninth. Dustin Pimm tied for 23rd at +1. "We're working hard on the things we need to," says Coach Randall McCracken. "We're going to put everything in the past, shift gears and move forward."
UTE NOTES: Utah coaches are addressing playing with confidence after a late collapse last weekend...Freshmen Jeff Kitches, Christopher Celio-Elia and Derek Adams will make their collegiate debut Monday, competing as individuals...The 298 in the final round was the Utes' highest since last March at the Callaway Invitational...Dustin Pimm won the Purple and Red Invite a year ago, firing rounds of 70, 68 and 64 to finish at -14...His 64 in the final round was his lowest of the year....Chris Gresh finished 22nd at +4.
QUOTING COACH MCCRACKEN: "I don't really know what we can change," said Coach McCracken. "Playing with confidence when things aren't going right is something we'll address this week."
