SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Vanessa Mortensen led the University of Utah track and field contingency at the NCAA Championships, qualifying for the finals of the hammer throw with a toss of 202-4 this afternoon.
This is Mortensen's first time qualifying for the finals, entering the event as the No. 7 seed. The top-eight places in each event receive All-America honors. The finals of the hammer throw will be held on Saturday, June 10th, at 10 a.m. (PDT).
Meanwhile, 400m hurdler Amanda Feigt finished fifth in the third heat this evening. Her time of 1:00.70 was short of the qualifying mark.
"This was a good learning experience for Amanda," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We're certainly disappointed for her but we are confident she'll be back next year. The first time at the national meet is hard. It's bigger, the competition is better and the judging is tighter.
"Now we have to think about Vanessa in the hammer throw on Saturday," Kepler continues. "Her first throw today wasn't that good. But, she finally put everything out of her head and just threw it the second time. That's when it all happened for her as she was able to throw it past the 200-foot mark for the second-time ever in her career."
