SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah ski team announced today that freshman alpine racer Kyle Kung will be out for the season after crashing during the slalom event at the Montana State Invitational and re-injuring his left shoulder. The Girdwood, Alaska native will be redshirting the duration of the 2006 ski season.
"Kyle has injured his left shoulder and will have surgery in the next couple of weeks," said head alpine coach Jaka Korencan. "Unfortunately for the whole team and Kyle himself, he will have to miss the whole season and focus on five to six months of rehabilitation."
"Kyle was one of the strongest competitors on our team and also one of the fastest skiers on the whole collegiate circuit," added Korencan. "Unfortunately, injuries are part of our sport and we have to deal with them on a daily occurrence. I know Kyle will put a lot of hard work into rehab and I'm confident he will come back next year even stronger."
Prior to Utah, Kung had several impressive non-collegiate results, most noteworthy being a 22nd-place finish in the SL at the '04 U.S. Nationals and a 16th-place performance in the giant slalom at the '05 Nor Am. He also competed on the '05 World Junior Championship team.
This is the second blow to the Ute roster, after junior nordic skier Casey Simons recently underwent surgery, preventing him from racing this season. Head coach Eli Brown is expecting full recovery of both student-athletes and is hopeful both skiers will rejoin the team next year.
