SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The University of Utah volleyball team held a 2-0 lead over Arkansas in its second match of the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic but saw the Lady Razorbacks battle back as the Utes fell to them in five games.
Game scores were 21-30, 25-30, 30-22, 31-29 and 15-12. Utah falls to 4-3 for the year while Arkansas improves to 5-2 overall.
Utah only hit .158 for the match and were led by freshman standout Airial Salvo. She had a match-high 19 kills and recorded her second straight double-double with 14 digs. Her .333 hitting average was second best among all players.
Adding to the Utah attack was Kathryn Lovell with 14 kills and Lori Baird with 12. Lovell hit .265 for the match (and had a double-double with 11 digs) while Baird's .294 hitting round out the top hitters for Utah.
The attack centered around Shannon Krug as she dished out 49 assists.
The Utes held a narrow edge at the net, outblocking UA, 13-12. Emillie Toone and Shelly Sommerfeldt led the Utes with five total blocks each. Amie Tingey added four total blocks of her own.
UA out hit the Utes in racking up kills at a .207 rate. Kele Brewer led the team with 16 kills while Iva Docekalova tallied a match-high 33 assists. Defensively, Ashley Miller's 32 digs and Amy Allison's seven total blocks led all players.
The Utes return to action tonight for their final match of the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic. They play the host school, Missouri State, at 6 p.m.
Notes:Airial Salvo had a career-high 19 kills ... Shannon Krug dished out 49 assists, one shy of her career high of 50 set Friday night against Iowa State.
