SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team rallied behind the efforts of Shelly Sommerfeldt as the Utes snagged the 3-1 win over Idaho tonight in the first match of the Utah Hampton Inn Classic.
Game scores were 30-19, 29-31, 30-28 and 30-22. With the win, Utah ups to 6-3 for the year while Idaho falls to 7-3 overall.
"I thought we were up and down the whole match," remarked head coach Beth Launiere. "We are now a quarter of the way through the season and we need to start playing more consistently.
"With a young team, we're going to have matches like this. We are lucky to have a deep bench and it helped us get a win over a very good Idaho team."
Sommerfeldt buoyed a Utah attack that hit a smooth .291 for the match. She racked up a season-high 20 kills in hitting a phenomenal .486 for the match. Moreover, she also led the team with a match-high 17 digs to record her fourth double-double for the season and her fourth in five matches.
Karlie Porter came off the bench to set the attack. She dished out 35 assists.
The Utah defense was on key as well as it held the Vandals to a paltry .135 hitting and outblocked them, 13-7. The defense was led by the efforts of Lori Baird and her match-high nine total blocks. Sommerfeldt helped out as well with four total blocks of her own.
Idaho saw three of its players rack up double-digit digs, led by Meghan Brown and her 14. She had a double-double with 10 digs as well. Kati Tikker hit a team-best .167 in totaling 11 kills. The attack went through Saxony Brown as she had a match-high 44 assists. Defensively, Stacy Sode and Erin Curtis led the way with 14 digs and six blocks, respectively.
Idaho does return to the court tomorrow to play No. 17 Santa Clara. The match will be held at Crimson Court and will start at 7 p.m. Utah returns to its friendly confines on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Utes host Santa Clara in the final match of the Utah Hampton Inn Classic at 7 p.m.
