May 28, 2005 - EUGENE, Ore. -- Vanessa Mortensen qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw Friday at the NCAA West Regional Track and Field Championships. Mortensen was one of six University of Utah athletes who qualified for the regional meet and the only one to qualify for nationals over the weekend at the University of Oregon.
Mortensen finished fifth in the hammer, turning in a toss of 198-feet, 2-inches. That mark was good enough to score four team points and qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Other Ute women in the regional competition were Candice Workman-Ekberg, Amanda Feigt and AJ Roby. Workman-Ekberg took part in the shot put and discus, finishing 10th and 17th, respectively. Feigt took a 12th-place finish in the long jump. Roby was eighth in the discus, with a toss of 160-11.
On the men's side, Delfino Arevalo competed in the 5000-meter run. He finished 13th and did not qualify for the NCAA Championships. Arevalo will take part in the 10,000-meter run at the national meet, having previously qualified. There was no regional qualifying in the 10,000 meters.
Nephi Tyler took part in the 1500-meter run at the regional meet, but failed to make it out of his qualifying heat.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are slated for June 8-11 at Sacramento (Calif.) State University.
