SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The University of Utah men's golf team finished the first day of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic tied for fourth place with UC Davis. The Utes shot a two-round score of 570 (+10) and will finish the tournament Tuesday, April 12 at the 70-par Talking Stick-North Golf Course.
Junior Steve Newren leads all Utes with a three-under par 137 in the first two rounds, one stroke behind Mike Schnegelberger of Drake who leads all scores. Newren shot a 68 (-2) in the first round and a 69 (-1) in the second round.
Freshman Dustin Pimm finished the first day at two-over par (142) after shooting a 73 (+3) in the first round and a one-under par 69 in the second. Pimm is tied for 12th place entering the final round. Fellow freshman Chris Gresh sits three strokes behind Pimm at 145 (+5). Gresh tallied a 75 (+5) in the first round before improving in the second round with an even par 70 to place tied for 34th.
Senior Ashdon Woods is tied for 42nd after the first two rounds, shooting a 77 (+7) in the first round and a 69 (-1) in the second round. Woods enters the final round with a score of 146 (+6). Freshman Nick Carter rounds out Utah's competitors with a nine-over par 149. Carter scored a 77 (+7) in the first round, improving in the second round with a two-over par 72 to finish the day tied for 67th.
