SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah ski squad teamed up with The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA) to help mentor at-risk youth with the annual KIDZ-SKI program last weekend. It was the second time this season that the Utes have participated in the KIDZ-SKI program. This event featured cross country skiing with the local children from the Youth City after school program. The event was held Friday, Feb. 18, at the Mountain Dell Golf Course.
"It's great for us to be able to ski with these kids," said Head Coach Kevin Sweeney. "It brings it all back into perspective for us helping these kids out. Seeing the smiles on their faces, and ours, makes it all worth while. It's such a great sport and folks of all ages can participate. I'm really glad Tim Metos has taken charge of this program and provided this opportunity for these kids to get out and try skiing. It's a natural fit for us to give back to the community in this way. We're more than happy to help out."
Youth City is an after school program for Salt Lake City children. Children can choose from a variety of activities each week including skiing. This marked the second year youth city children have participated in cross country skiing.
Other volunteer instructors were provided by TUNA, a nonprofit organization that maintains the 7-km track at Mountain Dell Golf Course for this program as well as for community skiing and racing.
The Mountain Dell Ski Track is currently maintained entirely by TUNA volunteers with permission of Salt Lake Parks (i.e. Golf Course). The facility has grown in popularity and is widely used by Salt Lake residents. TUNA provides all equipment, and volunteers log between 40 and 50 total hours each week in maintenance of the facility.
