Utah Women Get By Wyoming in Two Overtimes, 82-79

LARAMIE, Wyo. - It took two overtimes, but the University of Utah women's basketball team defeated Wyoming 82-79 at the Arena-Auditorium Thursday night.
Junior forward Kim Smith scored inside with 44 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Utah (18-5, 7-1 MWC) an 81-79 advantage. Wyoming (12-9, 3-5 MWC) turned the ball over with 21.4 seconds remaining.
The Utes' Shona Thorburn went to the free-throw line with a chance to ice the contest with 14.6 seconds left. She hit the first to give Utah an 82-79 advantage. But her next free throw was her only miss in 10 opportunities at the line, giving the Cowgirls a chance to tie.
Wyoming was forced into another turnover, as Utah's Lana Sitterud came away with the steal, sealing the victory for the Utes. It was the 28th straight victory over Wyoming. The Cowgirls haven't defeated Utah since 1990.
Smith finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Thorburn tallied 24 points, six assists and eight rebounds. Sittuerud was in double figures for the Utes as well, tallying 17 points, including five three-pointers. Smith and Thorburn each played all 50 minutes of the game.
Wyoming's Ashley Elliott scored a game-high 30 points. Hicks tallied 26 points, while Sara Hippen added 11 points.
The game was tied at each of the first three period-ending buzzers. The game was tied at 35-35 at halftime, 65-65 a the end of regulation and 74-74 at the end of the first overtime
Utah took a 74-70 lead in the first overtime when Sitterud hit a three-pointer at the 1:36 mark. But the Utes wouldn't score again. Wyoming's Erin Hicks hit a pair of free throws for Wyoming to make it 74-72 with 1:16 remaining.
With 31.4 seconds left, Utah's Kim Smith had a chance to put Utah on top by four, but missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. Wyoming's Ashley Elliott made the Utes pay. Her driving layup with 15 seconds left tied the game at 74-74 and forced a second extra period. Thorburn had a chance to win it for Utah at the buzzer, but her off-balance layup missed the mark.
Smith scored scored four points for Utah in the final 56 seconds to force the overtime after Wyoming led for much of the second half and the game. Included in those four points were two off an offensive rebound and score with 1.6 seconds remaining, which tied it at 65-65.
Wyoming opened the second half with a 12-5 run to take a 47-40 advantage. Sitterud capped a 7-0 Utah run with a three-pointer to tie it at 47-47. Utah took its only lead of the second half, 55-53, when Thorburn scored on a layup.
With four minutes to play in regulation, Wyoming took a five-point lead, 62-57. From there, Utah outscored the Cowgirls 8-3 to force the extra period.
In the first half, Utah survived a red-hot shooting effort from Wyoming. The Cowgirls shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field in the opening period. Utah used eight first-half steals to get seven more shots off than the Cowgirls. The Utes made 12 of those attempts and the score was tied 35-35 at the break.
Utah took a quick 6-2 lead on a pair of Sitterud three-pointers. But a 6-0 Wyoming run put the Cowgirls up 8-6. The Cowgirls led for much of the first 20 minutes. A Lana Sitterud three-pointer after one of eight first-half steals for Utah gave the Utes a 30-26 advantage.
But Wyoming countered with a 9-2 run to take a 35-32 lead. Utah's Deanne Hanchett drew a foul with six seconds left and made the first of two free throws. The Cowgirls pulled down the rebound on Hanchett's second shot, but Thorburn promptly stole it for Utah. Thorburn was fouled with 0.2 seconds remaining in the half and sank both her free throws to knot it at 35.
