SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah men's golf head coach Randall McCracken announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent. Two Arizona natives and one Wyoming product will join the Utes for the 2006-07 season.
Chase Hite, from Tucson, Ariz., is currently attending Sabino High School where he won the 2005 4A high school championship. Hite is currently ranked 286th on the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings and was named the 2004-05 Sabino Boy's Golf Outstanding Student-Athlete.
"Chase is going to be a great addition to our team," said McCracken. "He will bring experience and talent, which is a great combination. Chase is a competitor and when the chips are down, he has a great ability to get it done on the golf course."
Christopher Celio-Elia is currently a senior at Millennium High School in Goodyear, Ariz. and is ranked 169th on the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings. Celio-Elia was a 2005 4A high school regional winner, which he followed with a fourth-place finish at the Arizona State High School Championship. Celio-Elia finished second in the amateur division at the Arizona Open in 2005 and finished 46th at the 2005 Junior World Championships.
"Chris is also going to make a big impact on our team," notes McCracken. "He also brings experience and talent. He has performed well as a junior and I expect this to carry over to his collegiate career. I haven't seen a weakness is Chris' game. He is solid from tee to green and is the type of player who rarely makes mistakes."
Nicholas Hopkins rounds out the recruits for Utah. Hopkins, a Riverton, Wyo. native, currently attends Riverton High School where he won the 2005 Wyoming Junior State Championship and also qualified for the U.S. Open as a sectional qualifier. Hopkins was also a member of the 2005 Junior America's Cup team.
"Nick has all the skills to be a great collegiate golfer," said McCracken. "He's one of the best ball-strikers, for his age, I have seen in a long time. He is very athletic, has a great work ethic and I think we'll see some great things from Nick in the future."
