SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated the Wyoming Cowboys on Friday. The men beat the No. 25 Cowboys by a score of 133-122, while the women dominated the Cowgirls with a score of 146-92. The men pick up their first MWC win, improving to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 MWC. The women remain undefeated at 7-0 overall, and 5-0 MWC.
For women, Utah jumped out to an early 15-2 lead after the 400 medley relay, after claiming the top two spots in the event. In the 1000 free, Marta Stepanczuk (10:19.33) and Rachael Curci (10:27.42) finished first and second respectively, to help the Utes gain a 30-6 edge over the Cowgirls. Alison McInturff finished first in the 200 free with a 1:54.93 mark, and Loren Sweny claimed second place in the event, with a time of 1:56.36.
In the 50 free, Amy Barefield claimed top honors with a 24.39 time, while Jamie Trapp (2:09.44) and Adrienne Coburn (2:11.87) finished first and second respectively in the 200 IM. Meghan Demchuk (2:07.18), Michelle Blair (2:07.84) and Katie Hathaway (2:13.60) finished first, second and third respectively to give Utah an 86-26 advantage over Wyoming. In the 100 free, Barefield picked up her second win of the night with a time of 52.99, while McInturff finished second with a 53.10 mark. Utah swept the 500 free, with Stepanczuk, Curci and Melissa Young finishing first second and third.
Sophomore Kelsey Patterson won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 244.65, while finishing second in the 3-meter event with a 258.30 score.
For the men, Utah trailed Wyoming after the 400 medley relay by a score of 4-13, after finishing second in the event. However, Utah gained some ground after the 200 free, with Evan Castro (1:43.72) and Matan Ratz (1:43.86) finished second and third to Wyoming's Carl Marais.
Continuing to close the gap, Utah trailed Wyoming 33-41 after the 50 free by claiming the top three spots in the event. Jonathan Larsen (21.10) finished first, David Maasberg (21.59) finished second and Matt Bailey (21.61) finished third.
The men took the lead at 59-53 after the 200 fly, with Cody Rempfer (1:48.34) finishing first and Andrew Brown (1:55.13) finishing third. Utah's lead grew to 72-59 after the 100 free with Larsen (45.96) and Maasberg (47.88) finishing first and third respectively. However, Utah's lead wouldn't last with the Cowboys gaining an 85-84 edge after the 500 free. Utah's Eric Jorgensen finished second in the 500 free with a 4:46.10 time.
Utah reclaimed the lead at 105-102 after the 200 breast, with Wyoming's Scott Usher (2:00.38), a 2004 Olympian, finishing first and Utah's Rempfer (2:03.90) and Castro (2:08.39) finishing second and third respectively.
Utah claimed the top two spots in the 400 free relay to seal the win at 133-112. Sterling Richards won both diving events, with scores of 328.00 (3-meter) and 330.70 (1-meter)
The Utes are back in action tomorrow, Jan. 29, to take on the Air Force Academy Falcons at Ute Natatorium. The meet kicks off at 1 p.m. MST.
